I created these digital maps with the computer program ArcGis. I used a 1915 map of Rio de Janeiro to edit and update street lines from a set of streets digitized from the late 1800s. I "geo-referenced" the digital map, which ensures geographic accuracy. I digitized the parishes based on the maps included in the 1906 Rio de Janeiro Census. The ArcGis geocoder plotted individual points on the map (such as the cronicas and industries) as accurately as possible. I drew all of the streets and parishes by hand.
