The João do Rio Mapping Project

This website and maps are a product of a yearlong research project conducted in Brazil, made possible through a Fulbright Grant.

The objective of this project was to:

Explore Urban Inequality in Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the 20th Century, through:

•João do Rio's cronicas (stories he wrote about life in Rio de Janeiro)

•archival research and analysis

•creating digital maps of the data collected & spatial analysis

I conducted an investigation of the socio-cultural context of João do Rio’s Rio de Janeiro. Through a

detailed map series, I hoped to reveal the city the way

João do Rio experienced it in the early 1900s, combining demographic data with the geography delineated within his literature.
